Symbiosis 63 – Sines (Texas, Formant Recordings)

Hey folks,

The Texas duo Sines (Leroy Bella & Joseph Isla) hit us with a massive mix this week. Full of Juke, Garage, Dubstep and all the associated bass weight. Don’t sleep on this!

It’s great to have the guys back in the mix for Symbiosis. The Sines sound has come so far since we first made contact via Dubstepforum years ago.

Their label, Formant Recordings, has released some great tunes and they are about to launch their new label, Freshmore. Check out my interview with Leroy after the tracklist.

Cheers,

Simon

So tell us how Sines started out.

Sines started out as an alias to another group i was part of called South3rn. We were making alot of dubbier dancefloor tunes with this group. So i decided to take it deeper  with Sines.  It was actually me and another member of South3rn that started Sines. Then he kinda parted his ways with music and another good friend of mine joined me and we have been doing this Sines thing for about 3 yrs or so.

You’ve come a fair way musically since I first met you through Dubstepforum. Where would you describe yourself as sitting music wise right now?

Right now honestly my music is still ever changing. We have moved away from the actual Dubstep sound and are making alot more garage and housier stuff. We have even chartered the territories of juke/dance music. So just depending what mood we are in we take the music there.

Is Formant still going or have you replaced that with Freshmore now?

Formant is still going. At the moment we are trying to sort a new Distribution due to our current one going under financially (we just found out yesterday =/).

Freshmore will be a more dancefloor label that will release garage/house/whatdoyoucall it music. Kinda in the same vein of labels such as Blunted Robots,Ramp Recordings,Night Slugs etc.  So im gonna try to keep both labels running as long as possible.

What are your release plans for the label?

Well for Freshmore the 1st plan released has Icelandic producer Hypno and 2 very good remixes by Octapush and Wheez-ie from Houston. Hypno has had 2 releases on Ramp Recordings and Octapush(which I included in the Symbiosis mix) has had releases on Soul Jazz  and Fabric.  Wheez-ie is the new comer with a juke rmx on the release. He has some forthcoming releases later this yr.

What are your release plans for Sines?

We have 2 releases scheduled for late October and late November.

In October we have a vinyl release dropping on NSA Dubs which is a new label from the UK. It will be “Do It Up” b/w “Z Riddim. You can hear those here.

Then we have a digital release on stateside label RogueDubs with 3 tracks out in Nov.

We also just had out track “Twitta Dat” that was released on L2S recordings last yr put out on a Ministry of Sound Compilation. That was called Adventures In Dubstep and Beyond. Som pretty big names on that double cd comp. You can purchase that here.

Also we have “Stuff Dreams Are Made Of” out now on Embassy Recordings

Do you play many shows outside Texas?

Yea we are always looking for shows outside of Texas. We played in January in San Francisco for Surefire and also in San Jose as well.

Promoters contact us!

You have a little girl right? Is she involved with your music now?

Yea i have a Daughter and she is 4. Actually funny story i was teaching her today how to make melodies on a midi keyboard. Im pretty sure she will be introduced more down the lines with music.
