Symbiosis 70 – BD1982

Hey folks,

After a well earned break the Symbiosis mix episodes are back this week. BD1982 previously mixed it up for episode 6 and I thought it was high time that we get him back again. Make sure you check out his new EP on Seclusiasis, Trails.

Check out one of his latest productions..

XLII vs BD1982 – Envy Riddim (Mc Zulu Version) by BD1982

As BD1982, Durr has produced and DJed an ever evolving sound. It is rooted in organic tones and textures that collide with off-center dance structures. He is currently residing in Japan, but he has also done tenures in Philadelphia and New York. While living in the U.S., Durr began working with Starkey and Dev79′s Seclusiasis crew and has had tracks on the acclaimed Street Bass Anthems mixtapes as well his own The Bigfoot EP in 2007 and Let Talk Math LP in 2010.

Enjoy the interview and mix!

Cheers from Melbourne,

Simon

I reached Brian on his shiny new iPhone, running Skype. After a few minutes we decided to switch to the good old, slightly more reliable laptop connection and we start from there…

Symbiosis: How are things kicking along in Tokyo for you.

BD1982: This past year has been going pretty good in Tokyo. I think as far as playing gig, going out and meeting people, and doing some networking, as well as collaborating every now and again with different people it’s pretty cool.

It’s still like a very kind of tight-knit group of people you know. I mean there more people getting into bass music in Japan I guess, but they’re kind of scattered about the place. The kind of bass music underground, or whatever you want to call it, is still like a pretty general and localised kind of thing – even within Tokyo.

Now you are kind of getting some people coming in from the more house kind of thing and other scenes. So yeah, I think its becoming more and more, you know, kind of integrated in the club scene, which is always good to see.

We actually just started this new party every month called Laguna Base. It’s at this club called Module which is actually like my favourite club after moving here! So its really great to get something going.

It’s myself, P.O.L. from Numbers Crew and Matt Ryan, who is a originally from just North of London. We’re working on getting a good cross section of global base music kind of under the same roof.

Symbiosis: Yeah that’s very cool, that’s good to spread that kind of workload I think.

BD1982: Yeah of course, of course I mean it gets real hectic you know every now and again. But generally its good to have everybody putting their two cents in you know and working for the same causes so.

Symbiosis: So how has it been moving from American to Japan?

BD1982: Just before moving to Yokohama I was living in New York. I was in Queens for two years and you know prior to that I was in Japan for a year. Before that I was in Philly for five years and I go back to visit like generally you know like twice a year or so.

I think in the States its definitely picking up a lot you know. Just in the past year and a half or so like Dev 79 and Starkey have been making moves. I was there in Philly in June and it was a blast you know! It was just a really big crowd and it was a Thursday night in Philly which is really difficult to do.

But yeah I mean I think if I compare the two, I think people are more generally kind of clued into the constant like influx of new sounds and how things have kind of making these little subtle changes more in the States maybe than in Japan. I don’t know if that has anything to do with like just Internet or like the input kind of thing you know. We just, you know, you will see like records, new records in the store here that have been out for you know half a month.

Symbiosis: So what are you doing outside music you are doing other work or you are concentrating on the music thing?

BD1982: Yeah, I am working on new tunes like everyday and I have been playing out a descent amount but not every weekend. But you know at least like twice a month or so and maybe a little bit more. But I also work at a University in Tokyo and to kind of make ends meet.

Symbiosis: Yeah cool.

BD1982: Its going pretty well, I like them a lot, I mean like that there are teaching gigs all over in Japan. The university I am working at is really nice. It’s just a kind of like generally rewarding.

Symbiosis: Nice. So what’s coming up for you release wise?

BD1982: Well this past summer I have got about eight re-mixes done and you know there was the one for Dev 79 that just came out

I think in general I am trying to get some EP and single material for the time being. I feel like the album that we put out was a nice kind of snapshot and collection of stuff that it had been kind of going on for a couple of years and you know kind of book ended things in a nice wa.

I have just been trying to kind of simplify things production wise and not have too much kind of going on.

This being the second mix I’ve done for Symbiosis, I wanted to pick up from where the last mix left off and really highlight where I’m at musically during the end of 2010. This mix is also very much in line with the vibe of the ‘Trails EP’ that’s just been released on Seclusiasis and the Laguna Bass parties in Tokyo. There’s a lot of brand new tracks that have just been released, a few that are coming out in the near future and also a couple from years back that you can never enough of. In some ways there’s a minimal, bare bones quality going on but at the end of the day I wanted to put together a great snapshot of heavy bass music that I feel really strongly about across the board. Every track in this mix has its own way of bringing a visual quality to the music which is something I’ve always been interested in achieving with my own production. I hope you enjoy the mix and ’til next time!
