With a rich and varied musical past, Benjamin Ewins aka Be-1ne has creatively explored and used his talent on a wide variety of projects. Having first been introduced to DJing back in 1995, and music production in 1998, Be-1ne’s first musical output was through pioneering ambient outfit the Orb, appearing on their Cydonia and Bicycles & Tricycles albums. Other artist’s he has featured alongside are notables 2Tall (Om Unit), WItchman, Afrika Baby Bam (Jungle Brothers) and Rosanne Erskin (Coca & the Bean).
Pursing a more production orientated path from the late 2000′s Be-1ne launched his own label Area Recordings in 2010, which is currently on it’s 6th release. As well as having tracks released through Methodology recordings and Mindstep Music.
“I listen to and make a wide variety of music from ambient to drum and bass and all in between. Some of my favorite labels at the moment have to be Niteshade Inc, Auxiliary, Horo and Exit these guys are pushing the perception of what music should be at different tempos. Some of my top artists are 3rdeye, Wizeguy, Strago, and some kid called Burlish, to name a few. I suggest checking them out.
The most recent release from myself is, Be-1ne & Forensics – Lighthouse (Dub Injektion). I am working on new material and looking at a potential new release on Area Recordings by the end of the year. Looking likely to be the eighth release. I have recently done remixes of Compa’s – Security, which gained support from Joe Nice. As well as a remix of Pistons Beneath – Luminous Body which may come out in the future.
The idea behind this mix was to showcase the different styles of music I’m into from the past, present and future. The mix opens with what could be described as a Jazz interlude from Piano Overlord. Moving away from the stereotypical rave/reggae opener and allowing the mix to build through musical and melodic sound building it’s own momentum progressively throughout. In a time so obsessed with not giving music labels, the mix showcases the art of DJing and the ability to move through tempo seamlessly without the need for technology.”
